10 reasons why adults should boat

A while ago, I wrote an email about ten reasons why kids should boat.

And I thought, why not do the same for adults?

So here are ten reasons why really grown kids should boat:

✅ Build muscle. This is helpful not just to look good. Muscle-building activities like boating were associated with a 10-17% lower risk of all-cause mortality, according to the British Journal of Medicine.

Increase your health. Sailing helps you improve heart health, develop better posture, and strengthen your bones (through vitamin D production).

✅ Reduce stress. We all have stress in our lives. But the gentle rocking of the boat, the beautiful scenery of Hopkinton or Lake Quinsig, and the breeze of the wind help you live in the moment and unwind a little.

✅ Gain visual acuity. Boating provides spatial awareness by avoiding collisions or making difficult turns. This is also helpful for driving.

✅ Improve your coordination. Boating provides a coherent flow between your hands, feet, and eyesand your motor skills increase as a result.

✅ Improve mental wellness. There are studies that affirm boating increases so-called “happy hormones” like serotonin.

✅ Meet new friends. If you’re new in town, are visiting for a few days, or are a long-time local seeking to meet new people, then boating is a wonderful sport.

✅ Develop confidence. A lot of confidence comes from building skills and developing yourself. A challenging skill such as boating helps build your self-concept and give you the strength to handle other areas of life.

✅ Connect with nature. Whether you’re appreciating the natural beauty of the Hopkinton reservoir, or admiring the shores of Lake Quinsigamond, connecting with nature helps you breathe cleaner, live in the moment, and appreciate the environment. A break from technology is always helpful too!

✅ Develop problem-solving skills. When you deal with changing winds, currents, or other variables, you develop your resilience and learn to solve problems. You’re presented with two or more options and you need to choose. Decision-making is a muscle, and boating helps you strengthen it.

Anyways, these are ten reasons why adults would get benefits from boating.

I’m obviously biased, but boating is one of the best sports there is.

I hope we see you at the boathouses soon!

P.S. Whenever you’re ready, here are three ways we can help:

1. Give paddling, boating, or sailing a try. Check out one of our adult memberships so you can exercise, have fun, and connect with nature.

2. Get your child or teen on the water. If you want them to develop a hobby that exercises them, takes them off the screens for a while, and helps them make new friends, then boating is a great choice. Check out our youth memberships here.

3. Have a friend who’d like to try boating? We’re currently working on a referral campaign. For now, feel free to forward them this email. About us: Regatta Point is a non-profit who wants to put as many people on the water, so they can experience the joy and the benefits of boating.
