A Little Story About Hopkinton

I find myself constantly writing about Lake Quinsigamond’s history and attractions.

But I seldom write about Hopkinton. So this email is meant to change that.

You see, Hopkinton has a different beauty than that of Lake Quinsig.

The Hopkinton Reservoir is located within Hopkinton State Park, so there are no buildings or businesses on its shores. Plus, Hopkinton’s waters are transparent to roughly ten feet.

Now, I’m still researching Hopkinton’s history…
…But I found something really interesting already:

In the Hopkinton Reservoir, you can also find the Hopkinton dam, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places of the US. This is what the dam looks like today (photo taken from Wikipedia):

But the interesting thing is…

…This dam was built between 1891 and 1894 as part of Boston’s second major water works project.

And I found a few old pictures of the times the dam was built (credit: Massachusetts Digital Commonwealth Online Collections):

Aren’t these pictures amazing? They were taken over 130 years ago, and the dam was so properly built, that it has never been remodeled! (Although it’s been through periods of maintenance.)

Anyways, the Hopkinton dam is roughly 1.5 miles away from our site at Hopkinton State Park. If you ever visit us, I recommend you visit the dam too. It’s beautiful.

And remember:

If you (or your child or teen) are a Regatta Point member, you can visit both our locations: Hopkinton and Lake Quinsigamond.
